Switching to Fineyo doesn't mean starting from zero. Bring your history from another app, a spreadsheet, or your bank by importing a CSV file. Fineyo lets you match the columns, checks every row, and shows exactly what needs fixing before anything is added.
Import is free. You can use a .csv, .tsv, or .txt file with comma- or semicolon-separated values, as long as the first row holds the column names.
How to import
- Go to Settings → Import data.
- Not sure what your file should look like? Tap Download sample for an example.
- Tap Select CSV file and pick your file.
- Check Expected columns. Fineyo matches columns by name automatically. Tap any field to pick a different column, or skip an optional one.
- Under Date format, keep Auto detect or choose the exact format your file uses.
- Optional: set a Fallback expense category and Fallback income category for rows with no category.
- Tap Validate. Fineyo shows how many rows are valid and lists any failed rows with the reason.
- Fix the mapping and validate again, or tap Import to add all valid rows. Failed rows are skipped.
You can cancel while it's running. Transactions already added stay in Fineyo.
Columns Fineyo understands
| Column | Required | What to put in it |
|---|---|---|
| Date | Yes | The date, optionally with a time. |
| Amount | Yes | A number. Negative for expenses, positive for income. |
| Category | Yes | The category name. Empty cells use the fallback category. |
| Description | Yes | The transaction note. Cells can be empty. Columns named "Note" or "Details" match too. |
| Account | No | The account name. |
| Payee | No | Who you paid, like a shop. "Merchant" or "Vendor" columns match too. |
| Tags | No | One or more tags, separated by commas or semicolons. |
| Currency | No | The currency the transaction was made in, like USD. |
| Main currency | No | Your main currency, like EUR. |
| Exchange rate | No | How many units of the transaction's currency equal 1 unit of your main currency. |
Amounts
- Use a dot or comma for decimals:
-12.50or-12,50. - Leave out thousands separators and currency symbols. Write
1234.56, not1,234.56or$1234.56. - A minus sign makes the row an expense. Anything above zero is income.
Dates
Auto detect handles most common formats, like 2026-03-09, 09/03/2026, 09.03.2026, 9 Mar 2026, or March 9 2026, with or without a time.
When a date could be read two ways, like 03/04/2026, Auto detect reads it as day/month. If your file uses the US month/day order, choose MM/DD/YYYY under Date format.
Foreign currencies
When a row's Currency differs from your main currency, Fineyo needs an exchange rate to convert it:
- If the file has an Exchange rate column, that rate is used.
- If not, Fineyo uses the rate from Settings → Exchange rates.
- If neither is available, the row fails with "Exchange rate is missing for provided currency".
Good to know
- Names are matched without caring about capital letters. "groceries" matches "Groceries". Categories, accounts, tags, and payees that don't exist yet are created for you.
- New accounts start at a balance of 0 and use your main currency. Imported transactions then change the balance, so check your balances after a big import.
- Data goes into the space that's open. Switch to the right space in Settings → Spaces first.
- There's no duplicate check. Importing the same file twice adds everything twice. Consider making an iCloud backup before a large import, so you can go back if needed.
- Recurring transactions come in as one-off transactions. Set up repeats again afterwards. See Recurring transactions.
- Transfers come in as plain income or expenses.
- Excel and Numbers files need to be exported as CSV first.
Troubleshooting
"Unable to read selected file." The file isn't CSV, TSV, or TXT, or it has no header row or no data. Open it in a spreadsheet app, check the first row has column names, and export again as CSV (UTF-8).
"Missing required column mapping." Date, Category, or Amount isn't matched to a column. Tap it under Expected columns and pick the right one.
"Date value could not be parsed." Choose the exact format under Date format, and make sure every row uses it. Remove text like "Pending" from the date column.
"Amount value is not valid." Remove currency symbols, spaces, and thousands separators from the amount column.
"Exchange rate is missing for provided currency." Add an Exchange rate column to the file, or set a rate under Settings → Exchange rates, then validate again.
Everything was imported as income. Your file probably shows expenses as positive numbers, or in a separate "Debit" column. Put expenses as negative numbers in one amount column, then import again.
I can't see my imported transactions. Check that you're in the space you imported into. Older transactions appear under their own month, not the current one.
